2015 proved to be another great year for many reasons, but I have to start this recap with the biggest change to our lives that happened in the last year – the arrival of our newborn, Lincoln. He's an incredible little bundle of joy, and this adventure is just getting started.
I took a few more helicopter rides in 2015, continuing an obsession with this intoxicating way of viewing the world.
While my wife and I didn't get the chance to travel out of the country in 2015, we did make a few trips within the US. One of the best was to California for a good friend's wedding, which I parlayed into a full-on road trip with stops in LA, San Diego, San Francisco, and Joshua Tree.
I also attended the WPPI Expo in Las Vegas for the first time, which is a yearly gathering of wedding and portrait photographers. I met a lot of amazing people and even got to collaborate on a styled shoot in the dessert. I'm going back again this year and can't wait to see what happens this time around!
I started shooting film again in 2015, which is something I plan to incorporate into my wedding photography offerings in the near future. As someone who started out on film, it's so satisfying to return to the beauty, simplicity, and grace of the medium.
I also released my first album, GROOTJAMZ, which was produced through a connection I made in Iceland in 2014.
I took one of my favorite photos of the New York City skyline while waiting for a portrait session to start. I'm so used to seeing the city from the Queens/Brooklyn side that I forgot New Jersey has an equally stunning view! If you're ever on that side of the Hudson, drop by the Weehawken Dueling Grounds…you won't be disappointed.
While out doing some street shooting with a friend visiting the city, I struck gold.
I think my friend ate the best slice of pizza in his life at Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in New Haven, Connecticut.
My favorite rock climbing photo of the year wasn't even of someone climbing rocks.
I also became a pet photographer for a hot second when I dog sat for a friend and spent an uneventful Saturday playing around with lighting setups. This is Sugar. She's an awesome dog.
In October I had the privilege of photographing the surprise vow renewal of a fellow NYC photographer, Sascha Reinking. Sascha's wife, Jackie, was floored by the surprise and their daughter Lucy got a kick out of it as well. (Jackie also happens to be an amazing wedding officiant.)
2015 was a year of joyous exits from City Hall, whether you had zero guests or twenty.
The shoes were killer.
The rings were impeccable.
And the dresses were stunning.
The award for best mode of transportation on their wedding day goes to Lisa and Matt for an ever classic Rolls Royce.
The award for best brother goes to this guy, who stocked up his sister's limo for her wedding day.
Adam had the best groom prep of the year with a trim-up to start his wedding day.
This guy had the best dance floor game face.
Melinda and Alex had the best wedding cocktail, with a twist on a classic Old Fashioned.
The best wedding invitation suite belonged to Ben and Lauren. Lauren had a slight edge over the competition, though, as she's a graphic designer.
And yet again, every single client I worked with was awesome. Here are a few of my favorite photos from the many weddings and elopements that I photographed in 2015. I'm so pumped for 2016!
