NYC Wedding Photos Location Guide: DUMBO

When talking to couples that are planning an NYC wedding, one of the main topics of conversation is where to go for portraits. With DUMBO being the most popular neighborhood for the past few years, most couples are specifically asking, “What are the best wedding photo locations DUMBO has?” Even though that might be the hotspot right now, the more broad question is always at play — where should we go for wedding photos in the city?

In that spirit I’m going to start highlighting some neighborhoods throughout New York City that are great options for exploring on your wedding day. Because I am a location-based wedding photographer, the city is our studio and we can literally go anywhere and create amazing wedding photos. Each neighborhood lends its own character into the look and feel of the photos, so choosing the right location for the type of wedding photos you want is definitely something to consider.

Why you should go to DUMBO for wedding photos.

The skyline views alone are worth the trip over, but step away from the waterfront and you’ll find a striking neighborhood with cobblestone streets and converted industrial warehouse buildings. I love any neighborhood that offers a lot of options because it means that we can create lots of variety within a short walking distance. With a little bit of everything, DUMBO has a long list of photo spots worth checking out.

This waterfront Brooklyn neighborhood is nestled between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges (hence the name, Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass). It includes the north end of Brooklyn Bridge Park, along with Jane’s Carousel, the most photographed block on Instagram, and a former industrial neighborhood peppered with boutique shops and converted lofts.

What are the best wedding photo locations DUMBO offers?

There are lots of great nooks and crannies to explore in DUMBO, but there are three key areas that I try to visit with every wedding couple.

Fulton Ferry Landing

While technically not part of DUMBO (but it’s *right* there!), this ferry landing holds the iconic skyline view of the area. It looks straight across to downtown Manhattan, while the span of the Brooklyn Bridge soars past you to the north. Ferries come and go along with tourists who snap photos, but it’s never too hard to capture some photos where it’s just the wedding couple with no one else around. A must visit!

Jane’s Carousel and converted warehouses

If you love the waterfront but don’t want all of your photos to have skyline views, these are two great areas to explore for some variety. Jane’s Carousel is a restored, fully functional carousel. You don’t even have to ride it to take advantage of it for photos, but why wouldn’t you ride a carousel? The two converted warehouses on the waterfront are actually old tobacco storehouses. They finally received some love and care and have been recently reopened, including an elevated public space and a ground-level garden.

BQE Wall, Rust Wall, and other spots off the beaten path

The first one might be well known, but this one is actually all about the nooks and crannies! DUMBO is a great neighborhood for exploring random blocks, so let your feet you lead you somewhere exciting. The BQE Wall is a colorful piece of graffiti along the wall supporting the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (from the 2013 DUMBO Walls project). The “Rust Wall” is just the side of a random building I found a few years ago while exploring back in the neighborhood.

A few DUMBO weddings to dive into

The City Hall elopement of Mary & Joreal was such a great intimate wedding! After their City Hall ceremony, we hopped across the Brooklyn Bridge and explored DUMBO for their wedding portraits. The loop we made covered most of the best wedding photo locations DUMBO has!

This Frankies 457 wedding day started at the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, at the south end of DUMBO. After a first look, I explored DUMBO with Katherine & Quin for some fun wedding photos.

What neighborhood should I feature next?

New York is such a wonderful city to explore, especially on your wedding day. Do you have a favorite neighborhood you’d like featured next? Let me know!

The Brooklyn Wedding of Alexis & Mike

The Liberty Warehouse wedding that Alexis & Mike had last Fall was simply a BLAST! They started their wedding day with some amazing moments and details, and they wrapped up the evening with lots of dance partying with all of their family and friends. It’s always so hard to narrow down a whole wedding into a single blog post, and this one felt especially tough. There can be a lot of things that go into making really great wedding photos but the most important is to just have a great day. Alexis & Mike blew that out of the water and we spent the entire day documenting all of the fun and excitement that was happening around us. This is how you have a wedding!

Alexis spent her time getting ready at her parent’s home in Bay Ridge, which is also the home that her grandmother lived in. The entire getting ready process had this amazing personal energy about it, but what really got me was the few minutes we spent taking a few key photos in her grandmother’s old bedroom. The photo you see Alexis holding is actually her grandmother getting ready on her wedding day in that exact corner where Alexis is standing!

I loved their first look in Cobble Hill Park! This was along the way from where Alexis got ready to Liberty Warehouse, and it was the perfect little neighborhood park to use for such an intimate moment. It was right before Halloween, so we also had this funny paper mache skeleton head watching on!

love it when couples hire out Peter from FilmCars to ride in one of his classic Checker cabs. Besides providing us with transportation for the day, we obviously can use it to take fun and unique couples portraits and detail photos.

We popped by Brooklyn Farmacy on the drive over to the wedding venue because…why not?! A quick milkshake at a favorite spot was a great way to carve out a little more personal time for Alexis & Mike to spend with each other before joining up with all of their guests.

We spent a little time capturing some fun and personal photos of Alexis & Mike with their wedding crew. Selecting friends and family to be in your wedding party is no frivolous choice, so we always make sure the bride and groom have some time to spend with those they’ve honored with this role. After that we got everyone inside for the ceremony and reception, and it was all candid coverage from there!

How amazing is this energy that Alexis & Mike burst onto the dance floor with? I love it when couples get right down the partying with their guests, and 74 Events had a great DJ setting the pace that carried on into the night.

A quick break was taken for the groom’s grandmother to play a tune for the couple on the piano, and then a very sweet and heartfelt trio of speeches was given by the father of the bride, the groom’s brother and best man, and the bride’s sister and maid of honor. The rest of the evening was wrapped up with more partying and a quick cake cutting to toast the newlyweds!

Alexis and Mike it was such a pleasure to spend the day celebrating alongside you and your guests, and such an honor to document your wedding story!

The Fortina Wedding of Jenny & Gino

I’m so pumped to finally share the Fortina wedding photos from Jenny & Gino’s summer celebration. If you haven’t heard of Fortina and you live in NYC, drop what dinner plans you have and go eat there pronto! They serve amazingly hearty Italian comfort food in a fun atmosphere that doesn’t take itself seriously but seriously kills it.

Jenny & Gino originally met in middle school when their separate schools co-hosted a dance night, but their first official date wasn’t until Valentine’s Day of 2008. After a few years of dating, Gino was going to pop the question on the night they attended the Bad Boy Family Reunion concert but claims that Jenny wouldn’t have been able to handle the combined excitement. He decided to save the big question for the following day — which was Jenny’s birthday! He played it cool and completely surprised Jenny at the end of the night when he popped the question just after walking back into their apartment. Jenny promptly “sobbed like a lunatic for the next four hours straight.”

As an entrepreneurial pasta maker and manager of a barre studio, Gino & Jenny’s jobs keep them busy and fulfilled. When they’re not working they love to dial up the relaxing to 11 and fill their time with painting, cooking, playing Scrabble, and just plain pajama couch surfing and movie watching. (There Will Be Blood and Love Actually top their movie lists!) Some of their most prized activities include Sunday dinner at grandma’s and laughing.

When we started working together, I asked Jenny & Gino what they wanted out of their photography. “The reason we love your work so much is because it seems so effortless. It looks so natural and your brides and grooms look so comfortable. We would love our photos to represent us as a couple – fun, loving, laughter.” Jenny & Gino had an amazing wedding day surrounded by an amazing group and I think we more than captured that feeling for them to look back on every time they view their wedding photos.
