Kika and Brian eloped on September 15th, with a ceremony at the Manhattan Marriage Bureau.

These two came to New York all the way from Berlin, where Kika works as an artist doing large-scale drawings and Brian works as a director of design for Blacklane.com, a startup transportation company. They wanted their wedding to have a vintage, relaxed sort of feeling to it, and that was reflected in the photographs we were able to take around New York City. This city is a setting that definitely fits both of their personalities and the modern-yet-timeless style that they were looking for.

Kika and Brian met as they were both flying through Newark Airport (EWR). He had just finished a conference in Portland, and she was headed back to Berlin from San Francisco. Brian noticed that Kika had her cat, Penny Lane, on a leash. He approached her to ask how she had managed to train her cat to do that, since his own cat, Sushi, definitely didn’t cooperate when he tried to train her to do the same. The ended up chatting about cats for a while before boarding their flight, and they met up again at the baggage claim to talk some more.

During their conversation, Kika found out that Brian had just moved to Berlin from her hometown of San Francisco. So, to welcome him to town, she invited him to a galactic-themed Halloween party. According to Kika, he spent months after that only able to refer to her friends by the costumes they had worn at the party: “Oh… that was the girl dressed as Nebula? Was that the guy dressed up like Darth Maul?”

Brian proposed to Kika in June of 2016, after they had talked for months about getting married. They had picked out a ring together in May, so a month later, when they were out on a walk, they stopped by the edge of their favorite canal by their house—which is also one of their favorite places to read and relax under the trees. Right after Brian proposed, one of the rare Berlin beavers swam by, which they took as a sign of good things to come.

Brian & Kika: thank you for letting me be part of your intimate and beautiful wedding day. I loved hearing your story and photographing you around New York City. I sincerely hope that you enjoy your images and the memories of your beautiful day for years to come.

Un and Steven eloped on December 10th, with a ceremony and reception at Freemans Restaurant.

Un is the director of development for a beauty association, and Steven owns his own landscape architecture studio. The two of them met on Tinder and had their first date the day after Thanksgiving in 2014. It was actually Steven’s very first Tinder date, and he came all the way to Brooklyn Heights from his home in Harlem—which Un thought was incredibly sweet of him. After their first date, they built up a good friendship but didn’t really date, simply getting to know one another and texting on occasion. But when that started to shift to texting every day, they decided to meet up again and finally realized that their friendship had grown into something more.

Then, last July, they had just moved into their first apartment together when Steven suggested that they take their dog, Ella, to Brooklyn Bridge Park for their early morning walk that weekend. They walked in St. Ann’s Warehouse and sat down for a bit, and as they talked, Steven started to choke up. Un didn’t realize what was happening until he pulled out a ring!

On the day of their elopement, I met up with Un and Steve in Brooklyn Bridge Park for some photos before the ceremony. Both of them had told me that they felt they were not photogenic, but nothing could be further from the truth for these two. Their excitement and pure joy bled through in every single photo I captured of them, especially in the park where they got engaged. I think it definitely helped that they were in a place that had such a special meaning to them.

After that, we migrated to Freemans Restaurant to meet up with their families. They held a simple ceremony and then sat down for an intimate celebratory dinner in one of the private dining rooms.

Steven & Un, thank you for asking me to be your wedding photographer for your elopement. I know that your future kids will look back on these photos and know how much you love each other—it was obvious for me to see, too.

Manhattan Marriage Bureau Wedding New York JC Lemon Photography

Alex and Lew eloped on December 2nd, with a ceremony at the Manhattan Marriage Bureau and a reception at the Cornell Club.

These two met while they were playing softball in a sober tournament. They had coffee at 10 a.m. on a Sunday morning because Alex couldn’t schedule another time for him, but Lew still asked her for a second date in the middle of that coffee date—and she simply couldn’t turn down that kind of confidence.

Lew proposed last June on the Empire State Building. Even though Alex knew it was coming, she didn’t try to look any different as they headed out together, walking around and looking for a good place for a photo before they settled on the northwest corner. When she turned around to take the photo, he was down on one knee.

Now, while Alex works in e-commerce for fitness and other consumer products and Lew works as a drug rehab counselor, both of them are hoping to move into marketing. They love the people they work with, but want to move on to bigger and better things.  The bride and groom have supported each other through their search for more meaningful careers. But while they are still working on changes in their careers, the change in their marital status went off wonderfully!

Six months after their engagement, these two decided to elope, and I was honored to be there for this new adventure for the two of them. I especially loved the moment when they walked out of City Hall into an explosion of confetti. The look on their faces was priceless.

We went out to the city for a few more photos after that and even stopped by Grand Central Station. The photograph of the two of them standing together, clearly wrapped up in nothing but each other while the hustle and bustle of New York carries on around them, is truly remarkable.

Lew & Alex, thank you for letting me be part of this new and exciting chapter in your lives. I wish you both the best of luck as you find new changes and new adventures together.
